GUM DISEASE

PERIODONTAL DISEASE IS THE CLINICAL NAME FOR GUM DISEASE, AND IT IS DEFINED BY 4 DISTINCT STAGES.  

STAGE 1:  GINGIVITIS IS THE FIRST STAGE OF GUM DISEASE AND IS DEFINED BY GUMS THAT ARE RED, SWOLLEN, AND SOMETIMES BLEED WHEN BRUSHING OR FLOSSING.  GINGIVITIS IS ALSO THE ONLY STAGE OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE THAT IS REVERSIBLE.

STAGE 2:  SLIGHT PERIODONTAL DISEASE IS THE SECOND STAGE OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE.  IN STAGE 2, INFECTION HAS SPREAD TO THE UNDERLYING BONE AND IS SILENTLY DESTROYING IT.  THIS STAGE IS NOT REVERSIBLE.

STAGE 3:  MODERATE PERIODONTAL DISEASE IS THE THIRD STAGE OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE.  IT IS DEFINED BY THE SAME SYMPTOMS AS IN STAGE 2, BUT MORE SEVERE.  BACTERIA HAS PROLIFERATED THAT COULD LEAD TO IMMUNITY AND BLOOD STREAM PROBLEMS AS WELL AS TOOTH LOSS AND THE SHIFTING OF TEETH.

STAGE 4:  ADVANCE PERIODONTAL DISEASE IS THE LAST STAGE OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE.  IN THIS STAGE, ONE IS EXPERIENCING 50-90% RISK OF BONE LOSS.  FURTHER SYMPTOMS INCLUDE RED SWOLLEN GUMS THAT OOZE PUS, TEMPERATURE SENSITIVITY, PAINFUL CHEWING, ADVANCED HALITOSIS, AND FURTHER LOOSENING OF THE TEETH.  TYPICALLY SURGERY IS REQUIRED TO CLEAN OUT THE HARMFUL BACTERIA.
